Outdoor Activites

Hot Air Balloon Construction

Students are given the opportunity to construct a hot air balloon with instructions from their facilitator. The activity allows students to follow directions and cooperate with others to reach a goal. When these balloons are constructed the students launch them to see how high they will fly.

Orienteering

Students are taught how to use a compass and the names of the parts. After learning and practicing, the students are given an opportunity to test their skills by navigating a compass course. This activity allows the students to work as a team and communicate with each other to successfully complete the course.

Flying Squirrel

Students are challenged with trusting their teammates as they fly through the air. The team will work in unity to hoist their anxious participant in the air in a circular motion while always being backed up by the facilitator. This activity allows students to safely enter their stretch zones while being encouraged by their class.

Fire Building

Students learn verbally the different ways to build a fire and how each student’s unique role plays an important part in reaching their goal. They discuss fire safety and how to have the least impact on the environment. Once students comprehend the information, they are given the opportunity to use the information and build their own fire, which is tested when their facilitator lights their project and calculates how long each fire burns. This activity allows students to practice putting information into reality and experiment for themselves which setup works the best.

Egg Drop

Students have the chance to use their problem solving skills to build a home for their egg. They will then drop the egg in its home from a height of 20 feet and see the results. They will have to work together to make a plan and come to a consensus for their egg to survive.

High Ropes

The students are provided the opportunity to expand their comfort zones and overcome fears while being encouraged by their facilitator and fellow students. High ropes consist of a number of different challenges varying from a climbing wall to zip lines. This is a life changing experience for most students that result in increased confidence and trust.

Low Ropes

Students are challenged by a series of problem-solving experiences that engage them to develop and solve a plan, communicate effectively with others, and trust one another. Each challenge draws upon each student’s participation, ideas and support in order to be successful. The activities are followed up with a debriefing time where students are allowed to process the events and guided into applying this to real life situations.
